Justin Verlander's Parent's Help Raise $1.5 Million To Help Build New Hometown Animal Shelter

July 23, 2018

Dogs have always held a prominent place in the Verlander home ever since husband Richard brought home a schnauzer hidden in his pocket years ago.

Now, they have three dogs including 16-year-old Riley, Justin's dog he adopted while attending Old Dominion University and are two year volunteers at the Goochland County animal shelter. On Fridays, they walk the sheltered dogs and help out but the shelter apparently wasn't in the best conditions, the old shelter was small, cramped, and failed to meet standards so they decided to do something about it.

Richard and Kathy are also co-chairs of the fundraising campaign for the nonprofit Goochland Pet Lovers and in little more than a year, have raised $1.5 million to build a new shelter (including a $25,000 gift from Justin and his wife, Kate Upton).
