2-Year-Old With Cleft Lip Adopts Shelter Pup With Same Birth Defect

A Michigan boy found his "pawfect match" in a rescue dog that shared his birth defect.

Bentley Boyers was born with a cleft lip, according to a Jackson County Animal Shelter Facebook post.

The two-year-old Michigan native had already undergone multiple surgeries when he came across a puppy at the shelter who also had a cleft lip.

His father, Brandon, knew instantly that they’d found the perfect furry addition to the family.

"He Facetimed me. He goes, ‘I think this one has a cleft lip’ and I said ‘get her’! We need her," Bentley's mother, Ashley Boyers, told WILX.

"To see him have something in common with a puppy means a lot cause he can grow up and understand that he and his puppy both have something that they can share in common," Ashley said.

Bentley and the two-month-old puppy, whose name is being kept under wraps, instantly connected.

"Bentley found his match today in this tiny pup who also has a cleft lip," the shelter wrote next to a series of photos of the two snuggling.

"It’s so hard to put into words how meaningful this adoption is to all of us so we are going to let the pictures speak for themselves,” the shelter added alongside photos of Bentley beaming and hugging the black-and-white pup.

“We wish many years of joy as this special pair grows up together!"

Animal Services Director Lydia Sattler said the puppy shouldn’t have any future health problems.

"Her disability is really not holding her back, and as she grows, they’ll be able to see more if there’s any change that has to do with that. But, she’s really doing well," she told the news outlet.

She acknowledged that the pup may “look different,” but it's “not slowing her down at all.”
